Coaching is a modern discipline that draws its guidelines and fundamental techniques from more disciplines such as psychology, sociology, philosophy, learning theory and others, then integrating them with an experiential and action mode. Coaching works on the present moment and on the actions to be implemented and improved in the immediate future. The individual, the team, the manager called also the ‘Coachee’ is the center of the coaching process.
Coaching can be summarized in a short concept: it is a relationship mode between a coach and a coachee, (eg: the person, the team a.s.o.) where the coachee is willing to focus on his goals and follow with actions to get the wished results. These objectives can be established for example by the corporate board or the company owner (macro objectives) or even from managers responsible for business functions or of entire departments or else from the same coachee.
Some examples of achievable goals can be found in the ‘Coaching objectives‘ section.
The Coach invite the coachee in the research and mobilization of personal resources, which maybe not yet explored and always challenge him to act. One of the pillars (in my opinion the first one) of the coaching activity is volunteering (i.e. the intention to act), which can be also described as the proactivity of the person involved. For example, if the person shows poor involvement, low level of action together with lack of volunteering then there are no foundations to continue in the coaching process.
The coach goes into the heart of the facts, where the person shows difficulties to act and stimulates the coachee to face his areas of comfort, encouraging the commitment and responsibility to the action.
With an empowering and positive approach the coach highly holds the motivation and passion of the coachee so that he can pursue the goals he has set.
The coaching process brings the coachee to discover its great personal resources, to grow and improve its self awareness and self effectiveness.
At the basis of a coaching process there are some important pillars such as:
– Voluntariness
– Reliability
– Transparency
– Code of ethics
– Professionale confidentiality
– Continuous updating of skills
